Separate health screening arranged for passengers from UK at airports

Dhaka: Separate health screenings are being arranged for inbound passengers from the United Kingdom at all three international airports in the country amid the spread of the new coronavirus strain, said Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman, Chairman, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh on December 23.

He added that special precautions have also been taken for incoming passengers coming from other European countries.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Civil Aviation M Mahbub Ali has said that no decision was taken yet to suspend air connectivity with the UK. "We will take necessary steps in time," he further mentioned.

Mahbub Ali and Mafidur Rahman said this while talking to reporters after a programme at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The programme was organised to inaugurate the extension of the internal terminal of HSIA, a corner of the international exit hall for freedom fighters and senior citizens of the country on the occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the inauguration of the passenger arrival lounge at Saidpur Airport.

CAAB Chairman noted, "We are closely monitoring the UK situation with due importance. Besides, we have already taken some measures. Passengers arriving from the UK will be screened separately so that the risk that is being talked about can be mitigated."

He said, "Special precautions have been taken at the country's three international airports. Medical staff and immigration at the airports are aware of this. If they have any doubts after the medical examination, the passengers will be tested through PCR again if necessary. We are not allowing anyone without this test."

Asked what action would be taken in case of transit passengers from the UK, the CAAB Chairman said, "Respective airlines have been asked to provide us with the list of passengers in advance who are coming to Dhaka through transit in London. This will ensure a separate health check-up for them."
