Dhaka: Police have arrested Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Md Shafiqur Rahman, his wife, and two others in connection with a case involving the abuse of a domestic worker.
The arrests were made at around 3:30 am on Monday, February 2, at their residence in Sector 9 of Uttara by Uttara West Police Station.
The matter was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division, reports The Business Standard. He said the arrests were carried out in a case filed over the torture of a domestic worker.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara West Police Station Kazi Md Rafiq Ahmed said the case involves allegations of severe physical abuse of an 11-year-old domestic worker. The accused include Md Shafiqur Rahman, his wife, and two other domestic workers.
According to police, the victim’s father, Mostafa, filed the case with the police station, following which the four accused were arrested.
Earlier on September 4, 2024, Biman Bangladesh Airlines appointed its former Director (Marketing and Sales), Md Shafiqur Rahman, as its Managing Director and CEO.
Shafiqur Rahman joined Biman Bangladesh Airlines in 1986 as a trainee commercial officer. Over the course of his career, he served as Director of Administration and Human Resources, Director of Procurement and Logistics Support, and Director of Marketing and Sales.
He also worked in various departments, including tariff, market research, reservations, and cargo services. In addition, he served as Biman’s country manager in Singapore, Thailand, and Greece. He retired from the national flag carrier in 2017 after a long career.
