Dhaka: Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam inaugurated free Wi-Fi service at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, on May 17.
Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, Information and Communication Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam; State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat; and Prime Minister's Advisor on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Rehan Asif Asad were present at the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking to journalists at a press briefing, Minister Khanam said the government has delivered high-quality digital services to airport passengers, fulfilling its election manifesto pledge of "fast and reliable internet for all." She also expressed hope for the imminent inauguration of the airport's third terminal, calling it an important upcoming milestone.
State Minister Millat underscored that over 37,000 passengers will be able to connect simultaneously and extended his appreciation to the Prime Minister's Advisor for his efforts in enabling the service.
The Wi-Fi network covers approximately 94,000 square meters, encompassing Terminal 1, Terminal 2, the Domestic Terminal, the VIP Terminal, the VVIP Terminal, and the car parking area.
The supporting infrastructure includes 250 access points, 48 kilometers of optical fiber and Ethernet cable, and 37 access switches. Each access point can serve up to 150 simultaneous users.
The entire system operates at a maximum bandwidth of 40 Gbps, ensuring fast and stable internet connectivity across the full coverage area.
The service entered trial operations on April 26. Since then, approximately 20,000 passengers have used it, consuming around 2.3 terabytes of data.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve digital access and streamline communication and online activities for domestic and international travelers at the airport.
