Akasa buys 300 CFM engines at list prices of $5b

Mumbai: India’s youngest low fare carrier Akasa has purchased over 300 engines from CFM International to power the 150 aircraft it bought from American plane maker Boeing earlier this month.

The deal for Leap-1B engines, spares and a services contract is worth about $5 billion at list prices. Airlines usually negotiate volume discounts on planes and engines.

CFM’s Leap are the only engine types powering the 189-seater Boeing 737-8 Max planes that Akasa flies. The airline currently operates 22 planes.

Its latest order is for the 194-204 seater Boeing 737 Max 8-200 the Boeing Max 10 aircraft.

Franco-American engine maker CFM currently has 2,500 engines powering 400 aircraft in India. It is an equally held joint venture between France’s Safran Aircraft Engines and US’ GE Aerospace.
