Christmas being observed today

The Christian community is celebrating Christmas, the greatest festival of Christians, with much fanfare, throughout the country today.

It is celebrated to mark the birth of Jesus Christ, on December 25.

The government has announced a national holiday to celebrate the festival today.

Churches across the country, including Ramna St. Mary's Cathedral in Kakrail, Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon and St. Christina Church in Mohammadpur in the capital, have taken all preparations to celebrate the day.

The inside and outside of the churches have been decorated with colourful balloons, designed cock sheets, coloured papers, lace and flowers.

Artificial Christmas trees have been decorated with colourful lamps on the church premises.

On the occasion, Christians visit churches and exchange gifts with family and friends. The King of Rome Constantine started the celebration of the festival in 350 AD.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages greeted members of the Christian community on the occasion.

They called upon the Christian community members to celebrate the holy day maintaining proper health guidelines.

The government urged the Christians to celebrate Christmas on a very limited scale due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides, it took special security measures in the capital for smooth celebrations of Christmas.

The national dailies have published special articles highlighting the importance of Christmas.

Bangladesh Betar and private radio stations and Bangladesh Television and private TV channels are also airing special programmes marking the day.
