Thai visa processing to be easier, quicker for Bangladeshis

Dhaka: Arunrung Phothong Humphreys, the departing Ambassador of Thailand to Bangladesh on October 7 said Thai visa processing will now be easier and quicker for Bangladeshis.

The ambassador said visa processing will only take three days as two outsourcing companies– VFS and Simon Company will scrutinise the required supporting documents for visa applications.

Humphreys made the remarks at a 'virtual farewell' event organised on October 7 by Bangladesh-Thai Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BTCCI), according to a press release issued on October 11.

Describing the new visa processing system as a 'breakthrough' in the relationship between Bangladesh and Thailand, the ambassador said it helps direct and indirect People to People (P2P) relationship.

Also, according to Humphreys, a large Thai company is interested in a joint venture in the sugar refinery sector in Bangladesh.

Moreover, she informed that Bangladesh and Thailand entered into a three-year long development plan under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Bangkok.

Under this plan, the two countries will work on human resources development, human security, sustainable development of Bangladesh, transferring technology to the Bangladeshi eco-tourism sector, food and fruits processing, etc.

Md Shahjahan Khan, President, BTCCI, in his address, praised the departing envoy for her understanding of the business potential of the two countries.

He said Bangladesh is grateful for the active role played by BTCCI to enhance bilateral relations between the Thai and Bangladeshi business communities.

He said that the Bangladeshi business community is keen to do business with Thailand.

Asif Ibrahim, Chairman of Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE), Director of BTCCI and former President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) said that Bangladesh has had historic relations with Thailand in the trade, tourism, and health tourism sectors.

"Thailand can be a tourism partner for our country, especially in Chattogram Marine Drive connecting with Noakhali. There is a great opportunity to build resorts and other hotel facilities by using Thai expertise in the hospitality sector. Also, globally reputed Thai hospitality companies can invest in Bangladesh," he said.

M A Momen, former President, BTCCI and former President, DCCI; and Matiur Rahman, Chairman of Uttara Group and Counselor of the Royal Thai Embassy were also present at the virtual farewell among other BTCCI directors and members.
