Dhaka: Bangladesh’s outgoing Foreign Affairs Adviser of the interim government, Md. Touhid Hossain, has said he is not willing to take personal responsibility for the ongoing issue of Bangladeshis being denied visas, calling it a failure of the country’s overall system.
Speaking at a press briefing with journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, Hossain said, “I am not prepared to accept this responsibility as the foreign affairs adviser. This is the responsibility of the country and the entire system. It is not solely the responsibility of the Foreign Ministry, nor is it mine personally.”
Explaining his remarks, he said that there are numerous opportunities available worldwide, but Bangladesh has failed to take advantage of them due to its own shortcomings. “We are fully responsible for not getting visas. The Chief Adviser himself has said that we are champions of forgery. If you engage in fraud, why would anyone trust your documents?” he said.
Hossain added that visas, university admissions, and other international approvals are largely based on documentation, and it is Bangladesh’s responsibility to make those documents credible. “If a woman goes abroad for a job as a maid, but her visa states she is a front office manager, just imagine the level of deception involved,” he said.
Warning of potential further difficulties, he noted that unless Bangladesh puts its own house in order, the problem will persist. “If we do not fix our internal systems, this issue will not be resolved. Even tougher times may lie ahead,” he cautioned.
