Dhaka: An IndiGo flight was evacuated at Chandigarh Airport in India on May 5 after a passenger's power bank caught fire aboard the aircraft following landing. The incident occurred on flight 6E108, a scheduled daily service from Hyderabad.

Local reports said the plane was stationary on the runway with passengers waiting to disembark when smoke was detected in the cabin. Authorities traced the source to a power bank inside a passenger's cabin bag.

IndiGo confirmed the incident in a statement. "While IndiGo flight 6E108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh was stationary after landing, an incident involving a customer's personal electronic equipment catching fire was reported," the airline said.

All passengers were safely evacuated and escorted to the terminal. IndiGo added that its team was attending to the affected customers. The aircraft, an Airbus A321neo, registered VT-ICD, would undergo necessary checks before returning to service.

Power banks present significant safety risks aboard aircraft, as they contain lithium batteries capable of storing substantial electrical charge. Sometimes lithium battery fires can cause personal electronic devices to explode.

Airlines generally prohibit power banks in checked-in luggage. IndiGo's policy restricts passengers from carrying power banks exceeding 160 Wh in cabin luggage.
