Dhaka: Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, has underscored the importance of upgrading Saidpur Airport into an international airport, highlighting its potential to boost regional connectivity and tourism.
The issue was raised during a courtesy meeting with Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita and State Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat at the ministry on Sunday morning, read a press release from the ministry.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized strengthening existing bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Nepal, particularly in the aviation and tourism sectors. The Nepalese envoy expressed his country’s interest in enhanced cooperation with Bangladesh to further develop these sectors.
A key focus of the discussion was the potential transformation of Saidpur Airport into an international gateway, which the ambassador noted could significantly improve connectivity between northern Bangladesh and neighboring countries, including Nepal.
The two sides also discussed the need to rationalize airfares on the Dhaka–Kathmandu route, aiming to make travel more accessible and promote tourism flows between the two nations. Dhaka and Kathmandu are currently linked by direct flights, though ticket prices have remained a concern for travelers.
Both the minister and state minister assured Nepal of Bangladesh’s continued cooperation and expressed optimism about joint initiatives to strengthen tourism and aviation ties in the coming years.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration and unlock new opportunities in regional connectivity.
