Dhaka: A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight to Toronto diverted to London Heathrow Airport after the first officer experienced a medical emergency midflight, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Biman's flight BG305 is a scheduled thrice-weekly service from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Toronto Pearson International Airport via Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome.
On May 7, BG305, operating with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, departed from Dhaka at 3:16 am and arrived in Rome at 8:39 am. Following a nearly two-hour technical stopover there, the flight took off at 10:28 am for Toronto.
However, after a while in the air, the first officer experienced a serious medical condition, and the captain decided to divert the flight to Heathrow Airport in London.
Flight BG305 landed in London at 11:50 am. Emergency medical assistance was arranged at the airport, and the first officer was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
The flight later took off from Heathrow at 2:55 pm as Biman arranged for another pilot, who was staying in London on a mandatory rest period, to join the captain and operate the flight to Toronto.
