Dhaka: A Dhaka court on January 28 sent Md. Habibur Rahman, former chief engineer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), to jail in connection with an ongoing corruption case, reports local media.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Confirming the matter, ACC lawyer Delwar Jahan Rumi said that the accused was produced before the court, where ACC Assistant Director Md Saidur Rahman sought his detention in jail. “After the hearing, the court granted the request,” he added.

According to the ACC, Habibur Rahman is a named accused in a case filed over the alleged misappropriation of Tk150 crore from the Cox’s Bazar International Airport terminal and runway construction project.

The commission stated that there is a strong possibility the accused could influence witnesses and obstruct the investigation if released on bail.

The ACC further said that Habibur is part of a fraud ring and may influence witnesses or destroy evidence if granted bail, making his detention necessary for a fair investigation.

Earlier in the day, the commission arrested Habibur Rahman from the Segunbagicha area of the capital.
