Dhaka: US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen on Thursday called on National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, with immigration-related issues featuring prominently in their discussions, according to a press release from the press wing of the chief adviser.
The meeting, held at the National Security Adviser’s office, covered a range of bilateral matters, including visa-related concerns, the proposed visa bond mechanism, and the return of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals from the United States.
Dr. Rahman welcomed Ambassador Christensen in his new role and recalled his past contributions to strengthening Bangladesh–US relations during his previous assignment in Dhaka and in various positions within the US government in Washington, DC. He expressed optimism that bilateral ties would further deepen during the ambassador’s current tenure.
According to officials, the hour-long discussion included broader aspects of Bangladesh–US relations, but particular emphasis was placed on immigration management, orderly migration, and cooperation on the repatriation of undocumented Bangladeshis living in the US.
The two sides also exchanged views on the reciprocal tariff agreement, continued US support for Rohingya refugees, American business and investment in Bangladesh, and regional issues of mutual interest.
Ambassador Christensen reiterated strong US support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and praised the interim government’s efforts related to the upcoming national elections and ongoing institutional reforms.
Political and Economic Counsellor of the US Embassy in Dhaka, Eric Geelan, was also present at the meeting.
