Denvar: 12 people were injured Thursday (March 13) when an American Airlines aircraft caught fire after landing at Denver International Airport.
Several dramatic videos of passengers standing on the wing of the plane as smoke poured out of the engine were posted on social media.
American Airlines said the plane had landed safely and taxied to the gate when it experienced an "engine-related issue."
Flight 1006 was headed to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport from Colorado Springs Airport when it was diverted to Denver around 5:15 p.m. after the crew reported engine vibrations, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
While taxiing to the gate, the engine of the Boeing 737-800 caught fire and passengers were evacuated from the plane using slides, the FAA added.
The 172 customers and six crew members were taken to the terminal, airline officials said in a statement.
Airport officials said the 12 people transported to the hospital had minor injuries.
Photos and videos of the incident showed passengers standing on a plane's wing as smoke surrounded the aircraft and runway.
“We thank our crew members, DEN team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority,” American Airlines said.
