Bad weather disrupts operations at Delhi airport ; 60 flights delayed

A sudden disruption in Delhi’s weather caused traffic snarls and flight delays in the national capital on Saturday, (May 27). At the  Indira Gandhi International Airport, around 60 were delayed and four were diverted. Both international and national flights were delayed or cancelled.

Passengers were advised by airport authorities to stay in touch with their respective airlines for any potential changes in flight schedules etc.

“Due to bad weather, flight operations are impacted at Delhi airport. It is advisable to contact the airlines concerned for updated flight information,” the airport tweeted.

The city witnessed an early-morning squall along with heavy rains today, and waterlogging was reported from several areas. According to private meteorological Navdeep Dhaiya, the Delhi Airport clocked a massive 102 km per hour wind gust before 7 am, which hampered flight operations at the time.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the Delhi-NCR area will likely witness pleasant weather and no heatwave conditions until May 30. The weatherman added that a cluster of cloud patches over Delhi-NCR was witnessed.

As a result, thunderstorms, dust storms, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds with speeds of 40-70 kmph are expected to persist in Delhi-NCR and nearby regions for the next two hours. The announcement was made around 6:30 am.

Several roads in the Delhi-NCR region were seen lined with uprooted trees amid water logging, which caused traffic snarls, causing problems for officer goers. Major traffic jams were reported from Vasant Vihar-Delhi airport road stretch, the Kanshiram Takkar Marg, and the Mahipalpur highway underpass areas.
