Boeing will pilot the newest and largest members of the 737 MAX and 777X aircraft families at this month’s Farnborough International Air Show and introduce new tools towards more sustainable and autonomous flight.
The 737-10, making its international debut, will join the 777-9 in daily flight and static display. The planes, each of which is the most economical in its class, will fly at the show on a blend of green aviation fuels, which Boeing sees as a major lever to further reduce carbon emissions. The company will also present a modeling tool that will provide actionable information on strategies the aviation industry can use to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Another decarbonization strategy is electric propulsion, and the Boeing Wisk Aero joint venture is debuting an all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi in Europe. The development vehicle “Cora” is unmanned, which contributes to the expansion of autonomous capabilities in aviation. Boeing will highlight other autonomous capabilities at the show, including its MQ-25 unmanned aerial refueling and Airpower Teaming System (ATS).
“In the four years since the last Farnborough Air Show, the world has seen the important social and economic role played by the aerospace and defense industry. We are delighted to reconnect with our colleagues at Farnborough as we together address the need for a more sustainable future and take concrete steps to ensure innovation and clean technology,” said Sir Michael Arthur, president of Boeing International. “We look forward to sharing the progress we are making.”
737-10 will be on the exhibition grounds July 18-21. The largest member of Art 737 MAX the family will provide operators with greater capacity, higher fuel efficiency and better economy per seat than any single-aisle aircraft. The 737 MAX family, which has more than 3,300 net orders, uses advanced aerodynamic design and highly efficient engines to reduce fuel use and emissions by 20% and noise levels by 50% compared to the aircraft they replace.
The 777-9, the world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet, will be present at the air show July 18-20. Based on the most successful twin-body aircraft – the 777 – and advanced technology from the 787 Dreamliner family, the 777-9 will deliver 10% better fuel use, emissions and operating costs than competitors. The 777X the family has more than 340 orders from leading operators around the world.
Defense, space and security
Boeing will showcase its highly capable military helicopters, including the CH-47 Chinook and AH-64 Apache, as well as mobility and surveillance aircraft such as the P-8A Poseidon, E-7 Wedgetail and KC-46A Pegasus.
Boeing will also showcase some of its newest, most advanced digital programs, including the T-7A Red Hawk simulator and ATS. In addition, the US Department of Defense is expected to display the FA-18E/F, F-15E, P-8A, AH-64E and CH-47F.
Global services
Boeing will highlight its customer-centric service business, which aims to ensure the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the global fleet by combining OEM expertise with data-driven innovation. This includes a demonstration of spare parts, modifications, digital solution offerings, support and training solutions, as well as an extensive global supply, service and logistics network.
Sustainability
Boeing will present its vision for a sustainable aerospace future based on collaboration, engineering research, data and extensive technology testing, including sustainable aviation fuels, hydrogen and electricity.
Autonomy
Boeing will highlight autonomous platforms such as the MQ-25, ATS and Cora Wisk Aero.
The company draws on decades of engineering expertise to accelerate autonomous capabilities that can provide sustainable and affordable transportation as the world faces a growing population and aging infrastructure. Boeing has made significant investments in the California-based on Wisk Aeroleading Advanced Air Mobility company and developer of the first all-electric flying air taxi in the US Wisk configuration is an important differentiator in the eVTAL market as the independence of its lift and thrust rotors is expected to support the vehicle’s simplicity and certification for market entry.
Other
Boeing will release it in 2022 Commercial market perspective (CMO) on July 17. The annual forecast is based on 60 years of analysis and understanding of airline strategies, passenger demand and economic data and is one of the most accurate forecasts in aviation.
Throughout the show, Boeing executives will discuss market opportunities, eVTOL, sustainability and other topics at media briefings.
