Dhaka: Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP), the joint venture between Germany's Lufthansa Technik and MacroAsia Corp., will discontinue its line maintenance services effective August 1, as the company shifts its focus toward base maintenance and overhaul operations.
The move is part of a strategic realignment of LTP's business portfolio in the Philippines, where it has long served as a maintenance partner for Philippine Airlines (PAL).
PAL, LTP's partner for over 25 years, has decided to expand its internal maintenance capabilities by taking over all line maintenance activities through its own existing maintenance organization.
Line maintenance refers to routine aircraft servicing and inspections conducted between flights or during short turnaround periods.
LTP did not disclose how many jobs will be affected by the closure, though industry sources estimated the figure to be in the hundreds. The company also did not confirm how many workers, if any, PAL would absorb.
Despite discontinuing line maintenance services, the two companies will maintain their partnership through base maintenance operations at LTP's Manila facility.
"By bringing line maintenance in-house, Philippine Airlines is following a broader industry trend among airlines," the MRO service provider said in a statement on May 14.
The decision reflects a wider shift in the aviation industry, where carriers are increasingly internalizing maintenance functions for tighter operational control and improved efficiency.
