Dhaka: For the record 14th time in 18 months, jet fuel price has skyrocketed again, serving a serious hit to the aviation industry of the country struggling to revive from the coronavirus pandemic.
The price of jet fuel has now increased to BDT 106 per litre after Padma Oil Company, a subsidiary of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), raised it by BDT 6 a litre.
The move will only make air travel costlier and the passengers will be the ones to suffer from the blow eventually.
Earlier in April, the price of jet fuel was raised by BDT 13 per litre. In December 2020, the price of jet fuel was BDT 48 per litre.
In the last 18 months, the price of jet fuel has been increased 130 per cent, according to reports.
On this note, Kamrul Islam, General Manager Public Relations of US-Bangla Airlines, said, jet fuel amounts to 40 to 46 per cent of an airline's operational cost.
Mesbah Ul Islam, Head of Marketing and Sales, NOVOAIR, claimed their survival is at stake under the current horrid circumstances.
Reports further cited Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation Chairman ABM Azad, saying, the price of all products have increased currently over the Russia-Ukraine war. Jet fuel price has also risen for the same reason.
"We don't produce jet fuel. We need to import it. The local price of jet fuel corresponds to those in the international market," he claimed, according to reports.
