Spirit Airlines to introduce new seats

Spirit Airlines will debut wider and more cushioned seats early next year.
The discount carrier will introduce the seats on new deliveries of its Airbus A320 series planes starting in late January. Spirit is slated to take 33 of those aircraft in 2023.
The seats, manufactured by Hong Kong-based Haeco Cabin Solutions, will have a half-inch of additional width compared to Spirit's existing offering, the company said. For window and aisle seats, that will bring the width to 17.5 inches. For middle seats, the increase will bring the width to 18.5 inches.
In the first row of the planes, the Big Front Seat product will be 22.5 inches wide.
The new aircraft will also offer more cushioning than the seats Spirit moved to on its existing fleet beginning in 2019, the carrier said, and will mark the debut of headrests for the airline.
In addition, Big Front Seats will get wider seatbacks that are angled nearly an inch farther back than the existing product (Spirit calls this metric pre-recline), which also makes it easier to reach tray tables.
The new aircraft won't offer more space between rows, a metric known in the industry as pitch. But while Spirit will maintain its U.S. industry-low (along with Frontier) pitch of 28 inches, the carrier said these seats, like those it introduced in the 2019 upgrade, will have curved seatback designs offering more space at knee level.
The curvature, the airline says, offers 2 inches more knee space than flat-back seats.
"Our cabin refresh in 2019 was a significant enhancement in the guest experience, and these new seats are another great step forward in increasing value for our guests," Lania Rittenhouse, Spirit's vice president of guest experience, said in a prepared remark.
