Dhaka: For the first time ever, Bangladesh will participate in the International Olympiad on Climate Change and Environmental Issues (IOCE 2025), held from September 13-20 in Sochi, Russia.

The event brings together young innovators worldwide to tackle climate challenges through exams, fieldwork, workshops, and project presentations.

The Bangladeshi team includes five members: team leader Farhan Masud Tassine (BRAC University) and four students—Mahdi Bin Ferdaus, Taseen Mohammad, Md Nur Ahmad, and Md. Ashikur Rahman—from various schools across the country.

Their project features an AI-powered Wildfire Prediction System using solar-powered IoT sensors to detect wildfire risks sustainably and cost-effectively, reflecting Bangladesh’s dedication to climate resilience.

Supported by FlyDubai, the team will compete in theoretical tests, practical tasks in a natural reserve, and laboratory reporting. Their efforts aim to challenge Bangladesh’s image as merely a climate victim, instead highlighting its role as a solution partner. This aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals 13, 9, and 17.

Organized by Sirius Federal Territory and the Talent & Success Educational Foundation with Russia’s Ministry of Education, IOCE 2025 also hosts international dialogues on renewable energy, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

Despite challenges like limited resources and experience, the team’s resilience showcases Bangladesh’s commitment to a sustainable future—locally and globally.
