Dhaka: London Heathrow remained Europe’s most influential aviation hub in 2025, handling more than 83 million passengers despite operating under some of the world’s tightest slot and airspace constraints, underscoring the airport’s continued global importance.

Recent infrastructure upgrades have begun to deliver tangible benefits. The expansion of Terminal 2 and the refurbishment of Terminal 3 have improved passenger flow, reduced missed connections and contributed to stronger on-time performance, according to airport officials. Operational efficiency has been a priority as Heathrow seeks to maximise capacity within long-standing physical and regulatory limits.

Sustainability has also moved higher on the airport’s agenda. A newly established sustainability wing is accelerating the use of electric ground vehicles, introducing smarter waste management systems and cutting emissions across daily operations, reflecting mounting pressure on major hubs to align growth with environmental goals.

Heathrow’s role as a global connector remains intact. The airport continues to serve as a key gateway for transatlantic and Asia-bound travel, supported by dense flight schedules and a high proportion of premium, high-yield traffic.

British Airways remains the dominant carrier at Heathrow, anchoring operations from Terminal 5. Rival airlines including Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines and Lufthansa also maintain significant presences, reinforcing the airport’s status as a central node across multiple global airline alliances.
