Dhaka: In a milestone for the national carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines was awarded the Gold trophy in the Best Long-haul Airline category at the ShareTrip–Monitor Airline of the Year Awards 2024 held at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka on July 5.

The award recognized Biman’s progress in enhancing its long-haul operations, expanding its global footprint, and improving passenger service on international routes.

The Silver trophy went to Qatar Airways, while Turkish Airlines earned the Bronze, reflecting a strong lineup of global carriers competing in Bangladesh’s long-haul travel segment.

Biman’s win in the long-haul category marks a turning point in its international service reputation. The airline currently operates direct long-haul flights from Dhaka to: London Heathrow, Manchester, Toronto, Guangzhou, and Rome, among others.   Its use of modern Boeing 787 Dreamliner, 777-300ER, and 737-800, with improved on-board service and growing schedule reliability, have helped the airline regain trust among premium and economy travelers alike. Biman’s long-haul routes are especially important for Bangladesh’s diaspora, students, and travelers.

On the other hand, long considered a benchmark for service and connectivity, Silver winner Qatar Airways offers seamless long-haul travel via Doha’s Hamad International Airport, with connections to: North America, Europe, Africa, and Australia. With its award-winning Qsuite Business Class and a strong economy product, Qatar Airways remains a popular choice for both premium and budget-conscious travelers from Bangladesh seeking efficient long-distance options.

Lastly, operating daily flights between Dhaka and Istanbul, Bronze winner Turkish Airlines provides a gateway to over 120 countries, making it one of the largest carriers by reach. Through Istanbul Airport, passengers can connect to: Europe, the Americas, and Central Asia, while enjoying smooth transit experience and culturally rich onboard hospitality. Its extensive route map and consistent service have earned it a loyal following in Bangladesh’s outbound market, securing it the Bronze in this year's rankings.

Long-haul airlines play a crucial role for Bangladesh’s growing diaspora, workforce, students, and medical tourists. Biman’s top placement this year reflects a growing confidence in the national carrier’s ability to compete with leading international airlines on long-distance routes.
