Dhaka: Irregular Bangladeshi workers in Romania have been given a fresh opportunity to regularize their status under a newly introduced government amnesty scheme.
The provision was introduced through Emergency Ordinance No. 32, issued on April 23 and published in the official gazette on April 27, 2026. Under the amnesty program, foreign workers from non-EU countries who have fallen into irregular status may apply for legalization, subject to certain conditions.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Bucharest has welcomed the initiative, saying it could benefit many Bangladeshis who became undocumented due to circumstances beyond their control despite entering the country legally.
Workers often lose their legal status if they fail to secure employment within 90 days of arrival on a work visa. In other cases, employer-related issues—such as failure to deposit deducted taxes or delays in processing Temporary Residence Cards (TRC)—have also contributed to irregular status.
Under the new framework, eligible workers must approach Romanian immigration authorities within 60 days of the law coming into force. They will need to secure a new employer, obtain a valid work permit, and apply for a residence permit to regularize their stay.
The embassy has noted that as the system is new, some initial challenges may arise, and workers are encouraged to seek assistance if necessary.
However, the facility will not apply to those who have already received return orders or entered Romania illegally. Authorities have clarified that final decisions will be made by the immigration department.
The amnesty scheme is expected to remain in effect until December 31, 2026, offering a limited window for eligible workers to transition back to legal status.
