Dhaka: Airlines across the United States have canceled more than 1,500 flights on Dec. 26 and 27 due to Winter Storm Devin, which is forecast to bring heavy snow and freezing rain to the Northeastern region.
New York’s three major airports were the worst affected.
At John F. Kennedy International Airport, 34pc of inbound and 23pc of outbound flights were canceled, while LaGuardia saw 35pc of inbound and 20pc of outbound flights canceled.
Newark Liberty International reported cancellations of 25pc inbound and 18pc outbound.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned of potential ground stops at JFK and LaGuardia until 9:00 p.m., after which all inbound flights would be suspended.
Delays were even more widespread, with over 6,000 flights across the U.S. affected. Chicago O’Hare International Airport had the highest number of delayed flights at 307.
Other heavily impacted airports included Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore/Washington, and Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport.
The National Weather Service said the storm was ongoing in the Northeast, with freezing rain across the northern Mid-Atlantic and heavy snow from northern Pennsylvania to southern Connecticut, creating difficult travel conditions.
