Aviation minister praises Japan’s role in Bangladesh’s infrastructure, technology development

Dhaka: Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam on July 26 praised Japan’s longstanding contribution to Bangladesh’s infrastructure development and technological advancement, describing the country as one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most trusted friends.

Speaking as chief guest at the Japan-Bangladesh Business Women Conference at a hotel in the capital, she said Japan had consistently stood by Bangladesh during difficult times and remained a key partner in the country’s journey toward economic progress and modernization.

“Japan is an old and reliable friend of Bangladesh. It has stood beside us in times of need. We are working together for mutual prosperity, and Japan has made significant contributions to Bangladesh’s infrastructure development and technological progress,” the minister said.

Khanam said the two countries were strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, women’s entrepreneurship, and broader economic partnerships. She emphasized that Bangladesh was committed to building an inclusive and developed economy through expanded access to education and economic opportunities for women.

The minister also highlighted the role of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in promoting women’s empowerment through the introduction of free secondary education for girls, calling it a landmark initiative that expanded female education and participation in society.

She added that the current government, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, had extended free education for women up to the degree level to further support female education and economic empowerment.

The conference was attended by the Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh, the chief representative of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), leaders of the Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, business executives, and women entrepreneurs from both countries.

Participants discussed ways to expand bilateral trade and investment, support women entrepreneurs, and deepen economic and technological cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan.
