Maldivian opens upgraded seaplane terminal at Velana Airport

Dhaka: Maldivian, the national carrier of the Maldives, has inaugurated its upgraded seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport, aimed at doubling the facility's handling capacity.
The refurbished terminal can now accommodate up to 90 passengers indoors and 40 more in an outdoor lounge, designed to reflect the turquoise waters and coral-rich underwater landscapes of the island nation.
The modernized complex features expanded boarding gates, a children's play zone, kiosks selling locally made souvenirs and light refreshments, and a dedicated staff canteen.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of the airline's parent company Island Aviation Services Ltd. (IASL), said the project, launched last year, brought a comprehensive transformation to both the interior and exterior of the terminal. He described it as a key milestone in the expansion of the airline's seaplane network.
Iyas also announced that Maldivian has ordered two new Twin Otter Classic aircraft. The planes are scheduled to enter service in 2027 and will join the airline's existing fleet of 11 Twin Otters, strengthening its capacity to serve resort islands.
Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen praised the development as a sign of the airline's improving financial health. He credited a three-year shift to a more sustainable operating model, which has increased the carrier's assets and accelerated infrastructure projects.
The minister added that construction of a new corporate office building is already underway.
