Public-private coordination vital for tourism development: State Minister Helal

Dhaka: Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs State Minister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin has stressed the need for stronger coordination and partnerships between the government and private sector to unlock Bangladesh's tourism potential.

The government will provide necessary facilities and policy support, but the private sector must take the lead in developing, marketing, and branding the industry, he said.

“Tourism is highly underrated in Bangladesh, although many countries run their economies largely on this sector. We have enormous natural and tourism resources, but our main problems are a lack of coordination and connectivity,” he said.

The state minister made the remarks at a consultation meeting organized by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation marking World Tourism Day at the Tourism Bhaban in the capital on September 21.

He said tourism development cannot be pursued through fragmented initiatives, urging stakeholders to prepare clear investment plans outlining funding requirements, implementation strategies, and the government's role.

Mir Helal also underscored the importance of positive international branding, saying Bangladesh's natural beauty, hospitality, cultural diversity, and achievements should be highlighted to attract foreign tourists.

Referring to the tourism potential of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, he said the government was working with the foreign, home, and defense ministries to ensure security and develop the region as a safe tourist destination.

He also called for international-standard tourism facilities tailored to the needs and cultures of visitors from different countries.

Highlighting service gaps at airports, the state minister stressed better coordination among agencies responsible for baggage handling, immigration, and customs. He suggested considering public-private partnerships where private operators could deliver better services.

He also called for strengthening tourist police, particularly in Cox's Bazar and other major destinations, and simplifying land acquisition and administrative procedures through automation and online services.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Fahmida Akter, and other officials. Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation Chairman Shamimuzzaman presided over the meeting.
