Russia, Vietnam agree to expand nuclear research cooperation through MBIR center

Russia and Vietnam have agreed to
strengthen cooperation in nuclear science and technology through the
International Research Centre (IRC) based on Russia’s multi-purpose fast
neutron research reactor, MBIR.
The agreement was formalised through the
signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Consortium Leader of IRC
MBIR and the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (Vinatom). The MoU outlines plans
for joint scientific research and explores the possibility of Vinatom joining
the IRC MBIR Consortium.
Under the agreement, Vietnamese scientists
will have the opportunity to access the experimental facilities of the MBIR
reactor, currently under construction in Russia. Once operational, MBIR is
expected to become the world's highest neutron-flux research reactor of its
kind, providing advanced facilities for nuclear research.
The proposed areas of cooperation include
testing materials and equipment under intense radiation, improving computer
models used to assess nuclear power plant safety, and studying the behaviour of
different types of nuclear fuel and coolants.
The research will also cover ways to
reduce radioactive waste, including the use of advanced technologies to
transform certain radioactive elements into less hazardous materials.
Access to MBIR's high neutron flux and
advanced research facilities will enable Vietnamese scientists to conduct
experiments under conditions similar to those expected in advanced nuclear
reactors.
