Sundarbans set to reopen after three-month closure

Bagerhat : The Sundarbans will reopen to fishermen, forest-dependent communities and tourists on September 1, ending a three-month seasonal closure imposed to protect fish breeding in the world's largest mangrove forest.

The reopening is prompting preparations across the Bagerhat and Mongla areas, with fishermen repairing and repainting boats and getting nets, ropes, ice containers and other equipment ready for the return to the forest.

Fishing and the collection of forest resources had been suspended across the Sundarbans' rivers and canals from June 1 to August 31. Tourist access to most destinations was also restricted during the period, although the Karamjal Eco-Tourism Centre remained open.

From September 1, visitors will once again be able to travel to popular attractions including Katka, Kachikhali, Harbaria, Hiron Point, Dublar Char and Nilkamal.

The Forest Department has also prepared Karamjal to receive visitors, with new facilities including a nearly one-kilometer foot trail, a suspension bridge, an RCC bridge and an information center.

Officials expect tourist numbers to rise following the reopening and said measures have been taken to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for visitors.
