US eases Bangladesh travel advisory to level 2, signalling improved security environment

Dhaka: The United States has upgraded its travel advice for Bangladesh, lowering its overall Travel Advisory from Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) to Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), a move expected to strengthen the country's tourism prospects, business travel and international confidence.

The revised advisory indicates that the U.S. now considers Bangladesh safer for travel, marking a significant improvement in Washington's assessment of the country's security environment, read a press release from the foreign ministry on July 31.

The development came shortly after a bilateral meeting in Dhaka between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Sergio Gor, Special Envoy to the President of the United States.

According to the release, Gor informed the foreign minister of the decision via a text message immediately following the meeting.

Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir was also present during the discussions.

The government described the updated advisory as an important recognition of Bangladesh's progress in restoring security and stability, saying it would help boost international travel, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

Officials said the decision reflects growing U.S. confidence in Bangladesh's overall law-and-order situation after what they described as notable improvements over the past six months under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The easing of the travel advisory is expected to have positive implications for Bangladesh's tourism and aviation sectors, as travel advisories issued by major countries often influence the decisions of tourists, business travellers, multinational companies and international organisations.

Industry stakeholders have long argued that a lower travel advisory from the United States could improve Bangladesh's image as a destination for business and leisure travel while encouraging greater foreign investment and international engagement.

The government said it views the revised advisory as an acknowledgement of its sustained efforts to create a secure and stable environment for both citizens and foreign visitors.

The United States' decision also highlights the positive trajectory of bilateral relations between Dhaka and Washington, reinforcing cooperation beyond security to include trade, investment and broader economic engagement.
