China explores Khan Jahan Ali Airport project in Bangladesh
The delegation inspected
the proposed site at Rampal on July 25 as part of a feasibility assessment,
accompanied by officials from several government agencies. Environment, Forest,
and Climate Change Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam was also present during the
visit.
The airport project was
first proposed nearly three decades ago, when the foundation stone was laid
during the administration of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Initially, around 75
acres of land were acquired, while more than 500 additional acres were later
acquired under a subsequent government.
Boundary walls and
partial land development were also completed, but the project failed to
progress after no foreign investor came forward under a proposed public-private
partnership model.
The current government
has revived efforts to implement the airport, viewing it as a key
infrastructure project for the southwest region.
Officials said the
airport could strengthen connectivity for Mongla Port, support economic zones
and export processing zones, promote Sundarbans tourism, and improve cargo
transportation and regional trade.
Following the site visit,
a member of the Chinese delegation, identified as Peter, said the team was
satisfied with the location and would hold further discussions with the
Bangladesh government on the project.
The visit marks the latest step in Bangladesh's efforts to secure foreign investment for the long-stalled airport, although no formal agreement has yet been announced.
