Egypt plans USD 3.5bn Cairo Airport expansion

Dhaka: Egypt has announced plans for a USD 3.5 billion expansion of Cairo International Airport that aims to double the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to around 70 million.

The centerpiece of the project will be the construction of a new Terminal 4, which is expected to accommodate up to 40 million passengers annually. Cairo Airport currently serves more than 30 million passengers a year.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reviewed the expansion plan with Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El-Hefny and officials involved in the project’s development. The government said the initiative is designed to meet growing demand from tourism and aviation while attracting more international airlines and transit passengers.

The new terminal will feature artificial intelligence-based systems and advanced digital technologies to streamline airport operations, reduce passenger waiting times and improve resource management. The facility will also follow international standards for sustainability, safety and environmental protection.

Officials said the expansion will strengthen Cairo’s role as a major aviation hub connecting Africa, Asia and Europe. The project is part of Egypt’s broader strategy under Vision 2030 to develop the country’s aviation and logistics sectors.

The government expects the upgraded airport infrastructure to support tourism growth, enhance trade and investment opportunities, and increase Cairo’s competitiveness among regional air transport hubs.
