Japan Foundation urged to establish office in Bangladesh

Dhaka: State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Md. Nurul Haque has called on the Japan Foundation to establish a permanent office in Bangladesh to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in workforce development.
The call came during a courtesy meeting held at the ministry on Wednesday, April 1, with Japan Foundation Managing Director Koike Wakao and representative Yuko Hari. The discussion focused on enhancing collaboration and exploring the possibility of setting up a local office of the foundation.
Highlighting the longstanding ties between Bangladesh and Japan, the state minister described the relationship as deep-rooted and historic. He noted the Japan International Cooperation Agency remains one of Bangladesh’s key development partners. Referring to the recently signed memorandum of understanding on sending skilled workers to Japan, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its successful implementation.
He assured the ministry would extend full support if the Japan Foundation proceeds with establishing an office in Bangladesh.
Senior Secretary Md. Mokhter Ahmed emphasized the importance of skill development, noting that language alone is not the only barrier for Bangladeshi workers seeking employment in Japan. He stressed the need for comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture, customs, and workplace practices, adding that training under Japanese instructors would help workers adapt more easily.
Professor Abdullah Al Mamun of the University of Dhaka suggested identifying specific areas of cooperation and maintaining prompt communication with the Japanese Embassy through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also underscored the importance of having a clear government plan in place.
In response, Koike Wakao welcomed Bangladesh’s initiative and assured that the proposal to establish an office would be conveyed to the foundation’s higher authorities.
Senior officials of the ministry, including Joint Secretary Md. Shahidul Islam Chowdhury and Deputy Secretary Md. Hedayetul Islam Mondol, were also present at the meeting.
