Rooppur NPP Moves closer to grid connection with advanced NLDC Integration


The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is taking a major technical
step toward integration with Bangladesh’s national electricity grid, with the
signing of an agreement to connect the plant’s power transmission system to the
National Load Despatch Centre’s (NLDC) advanced SCADA/EMS control system.
The agreement was signed between the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and GE Vernova to integrate essential transmission data and signals from Units 1 and 2 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, as well as its 400 kV and 230 kV GIS substations, into the NLDC’s SCADA/EMS system.

Under the agreement, critical data and signals from eight
transmission lines serving Units 1 and 2, together with the relevant
information from the 400 kV and 230 kV GIS substations, will be integrated into
the national grid’s monitoring and control system.
The integration will allow the relevant control centre to
monitor essential information from Rooppur’s power transmission system through
the NLDC’s SCADA/EMS platform. This is expected to strengthen coordination
between the nuclear power plant and the national grid and support reliable
transmission of electricity once the plant begins commercial operation.
The integration is considered an important technical milestone for Rooppur as the project advances toward commissioning. It will also support the safe and reliable operation of the plant’s transmission facilities and facilitate the smooth incorporation of its electricity into the national grid.

GE Vernova has been involved in SCADA/EMS integration for
power plants across Bangladesh. Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Power,
Energy and Mineral Resources has also supported implementing the Rooppur
integration through an agreement with GE Vernova.
The development comes as Unit 1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power
Plant is undergoing post-fuel-loading testing. With the plant progressing
toward its scheduled commissioning and operational milestones, completing the
SCADA/EMS integration on an urgent basis has become an important part of
preparations for connecting Rooppur to the national grid.
