Rosatom has begun rehabilitating a uranium legacy site in Tajikistan.
The work is being carried out on the territory of workshop No. 3 of the Taboshar site.
Rosatom State Corporation, through its
Central Design and Technology Institute (JSC CPTI, a Rosatom Fuel Division
enterprise), has begun remediation work on the uranium legacy site, Workshop
No. 3, at the Taboshar site. The site is located in the village of Istiklol in
the Sughd Region of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The work is being carried out under the intergovernmental agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan on cooperation in the rehabilitation of areas affected by uranium mining and ore production. The rehabilitation activities are aimed at improving the environmental situation and creating conditions for the future safe use of the area.
Previously, the Center for Preventive
Maintenance (CPTI) completed a contract to develop design and estimate
documentation for the rehabilitation of two facilities in the Sughd region :
Workshop No. 3 at the Taboshar site and a tailings storage facility in
the village of Adarasman. The documentation received positive approval from
authorized regulatory authorities.
"The start of work at the Taboshar
site marks another important milestone in our ongoing efforts to eliminate
uranium legacy in Tajikistan. The project utilizes modern engineering solutions
and strictly adheres to safety requirements. Its implementation will improve
the environmental situation, create conditions for regional development, and
enhance the quality of life for local residents," noted Yakov Nikonov, CEO
of JSC CPTI.
