Dhaka: The government has not taken any decision regarding the renaming of the capital’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Afroza Khanam Rita said on Tuesday, March 31.
Speaking during the question-and-answer session of the first sitting of the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister clarified that there is currently no plan to restore the airport’s former name, “Zia International Airport.”
The clarification came in response to a question from Member of Parliament Sarwar Jamal Nizam, who asked whether the government intended to revert to the previous name and, if so, what steps were being considered.
In reply, the minister stated that no such decision has been made so far regarding renaming the country’s prime international airport in Dhaka.
She further added that the government is presently focused on implementing people-oriented programs in line with its election manifesto. However, she noted that any future decision on the airport’s name could be taken through discussion and consultation.
