Dhaka: One passenger survives the Air India plane crash that killed 240 onboard. Earlier today, an Air India passenger plane bound for London crashed into a medical college in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad after takeoff, marking one of India’s worst airline disasters in decades, as per officials.
Medical students who were in the college hostel when Flight 171 hit the building are among the dead too, said Ahmedabad state police officer.
Doctors from the Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital said they had examined the lone survivor of the crash brought in, Vishwashkumar Ramesh. He was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body, as per reports.
The flight crashed shortly after takeoff from the Indian city, carrying at least 242 people. The Boeing 787 plane carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese, as per the airline.
Authorities in London confirmed that the plane was due to land at the city’s Gatwick airport at 6:25 pm local time (17:25GMT).
Boeing CEO and President Kelly Ortberg, said, “I have spoken with Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.”
In a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus said, “We extend our deepest condolences to all the families who lost their dear ones at this tragic incident. At this trying hour, our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people and Government of India, and offer our full support in any form.”
