Air Canada pilot accused of flying without proper license for 17 years

Dhaka: A former Air Canada pilot is facing criminal charges for allegedly operating commercial flights for 17 years without holding the required license for his role.
59-year-old Geoffrey Wall from Ontario, who had been with Air Canada for 27 years since 1998, is accused of forging his credentials since 2009, when he was promoted to captain. The captain's role requires an airline transport pilot license (ATPL), which is obtained in part by passing a series of written exams.
Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich of Peel Regional Police drew a stark comparison: "This is very similar to a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain surgery in their office."
Police said Wall allegedly flew 900 domestic and international flights over the 17-year period, operating several types of Boeing aircraft, and earned millions of USD in salary — all without the required credentials.
The alleged fraud was uncovered during a routine evaluation when inconsistencies were flagged in his license documentation. Transport Canada launched an investigation, which was followed by a criminal probe by Peel Regional Police in the Toronto area.
On June 1, Wall was charged with seven counts, including fraud, forging documents, and possession of counterfeit mark.
Air Canada said Wall held a valid commercial pilot license but not the ATPL required to serve as captain under Canadian regulations. The airline removed him from duty immediately after the false documents were discovered last year and voluntarily reported the matter to Transport Canada.
The airline maintained that passenger safety was never at risk, noting all pilots undergo competency training every six months. Following the discovery, it completed an audit of its entire pilot roster and found no other compliance issues.
Milinovich noted that offenders can become highly skilled at deception, adding that fraud of this nature is not uncommon and can go undetected for years before eventually catching up with the offenders.
