Malaysia steps up plans to become Asia-Pacific aviation hub

Transport Minister
Anthony Loke said the strategy would extend beyond Kuala Lumpur, with airports
in Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching expected to play a larger role in
connecting Malaysia with regional and global markets.
Loke said stronger air
links would facilitate the movement of people, goods and investment while
deepening economic ties with major Asian centers.
He highlighted the
growing connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, which are less than
four hours apart and share the same time zone. Cathay Pacific currently
operates four daily flights between the two cities.
Malaysia is also seeking
to transform Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) into a major ASEAN air
cargo hub.
The airport has partnered
with Henan Airport in Zhengzhou to develop a dual cargo hub under the “Air Silk
Road” concept, aimed at strengthening freight links between Southeast Asia and
China.
Malaysia is further
exploring closer cooperation with Hong Kong International Airport to establish
a dual-hub network linking ASEAN with Hong Kong.
