Govt. moves to overhaul visa policy to ease foreign entry, boost tourism

Dhaka: The government has initiated the process of replacing the existing 2006 visa policy with a new framework aimed at facilitating the entry and exit of foreign nationals, boosting foreign investment and supporting the growth of the tourism sector.
A draft of the proposed Visa Policy 2026 was presented at the Cabinet meeting on July 2.
The Cabinet decided to form a committee, led by the finance minister, to examine and further refine the draft before it is finalized.
According to officials, the proposed policy seeks to establish a modern, efficient, and service-oriented immigration system.
Its key objectives include streamlining the entry and departure of foreign nationals, attracting foreign investment and international business, facilitating the arrival of skilled professionals, and promoting tourism and the hospitality industry.
The draft policy also aims to encourage technology and knowledge transfer, safeguard national security, maintain a balanced diplomatic approach, and manage international travel on the basis of reciprocity.
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani said the proposed Visa Policy 2026 is designed to make Bangladesh more attractive to foreign investors, international businesses, and skilled professionals while strengthening the country's tourism and hospitality sectors.
He said the policy also places emphasis on promoting technology and knowledge transfer and maintaining national security alongside a balanced approach to international diplomatic relations.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide secretarial support to the cabinet committee during the review and finalization process.
