Dhaka: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH79 to Kuala Lumpur performed a rejected takeoff after a suspected tire burst at Hong Kong International Airport. A thirteen-year-old Boeing 737-800, registered 9M-MXK, was operating the flight during the incident.
Local media reports said at around 09:20, a loud bang accompanied by violent vibrations erupted as the aircraft accelerated down the runway. The pilots immediately aborted the takeoff and brought the aircraft to a halt.
Emergency services, including the fire brigade, police, and paramedics, promptly rushed to the scene. The aircraft remained on the taxiway for approximately an hour before being towed to the apron.
ADS-B data from a flight tracking platform shows the aircraft had reached a top ground speed of 54 knots before the takeoff was aborted.
Passengers were subsequently escorted back to the terminal while the flight faced delays. No injuries were reported.
A passenger onboard shared details on social media, noting that some overhead panels came loose and oxygen masks were reportedly deployed in the lavatories during the incident.
Flight MH79 was scheduled to land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12:45. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
