Thailand moves ahead with plans to develop seaplane services

The Ministry of Transport
has established a strategic integration committee to coordinate the development
of the sector, including infrastructure, regulations, services and long-term
operational planning.
The initiative will focus
on creating a framework covering aviation safety, environmental protection,
community interests and operational requirements. Authorities also plan to
strengthen cooperation between government agencies and private-sector operators
as the country develops the new mode of transport.
Under the plan, potential
locations for seaplane facilities will be assessed individually, taking into
account aviation and maritime safety, waterway navigation, environmental
considerations, protected areas and existing legal requirements.
Authorities will also
examine how the facilities could benefit local communities and improve access
to tourism destinations.
Beyond passenger
services, seaplanes could be used for public-interest operations and emergency
response, according to the initiative.
The planned network is
expected to provide travelers with additional transportation options while
improving access to Thailand’s islands and coastal destinations for both
domestic and international visitors.
The government also sees
seaplane operations as a potential contributor to tourism, trade and
investment, while supporting Thailand’s broader ambition to strengthen its
position as a regional aviation hub.
